The event touched our hearts and changed our attitudes to asylum seekers in Australia. Due to the intense mood of the crisis I chose a peaceful memorial and did not use symbols or materials that would offend. 353 pebbles are arranged in a circle, with a diameter of 3 metres. The stones are smooth from a coastal landscape, carrying connection to the ocean where the victims were drowned. The circle surrounds a sculpture of a Middle Eastern woman kneeling; mourning and praying for her loved ones lost in the tragedy. - Maggie McDade, Year 10 Hillbrook Anglican School.
